Sunday 15th September 2013 - Grassington, Yorkshire

This month all walks start and finish in Grassington. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt.  There will be NO toilet stop on the outward journey. Toilets are available in the car park at the start of the walks.  There are plenty of refreshment opportunities in Grassington at the end of the day.  We plan to leave at 5.30pm and should be back in Formby by 7.30pm

The cost of travel will be £10.00 for members, £13.00 for non-members and £5.00 for Leaders, children and students in full time education. Please make your cheque payable to Range Walking Club and ensure it is signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Please send in your return to the Treasurer before 6th September; places will be booked on the coach by the treasurer on a first come first served basis.

Cancellations: if you need to cancel or make a late booking, please contact the Treasurer on 01704 871308 who will endeavour to substitute your booking from any waiting list. If this is not possible, then regrettably we will not be able to give you a refund as coaches will have been booked on initial returns.

‘A’ Walk
Distance: 13.5 miles
Ascent: 1900 ft
Ken Bryning
Bob Scurr

A high level walk along the western side of Embsay Moor passing the Cracoe war memorial and the Rylstone Cross.
Starting at Grassington we leave the rear of the main car park to cross the bridge over the River Wharfe and Linton falls to Linton before climbing the hillside to Thorpe.(NB Toilets - Gold award - are available in Linton so we hope to make an early departure off the coach!)
A steep climb takes us to the shooting lodge ( SE 015599) on the moor, before traversing the Western side of this Gritstone moor (part of the Duke of Devonshire’s estate) and passing the famous Cracoe war Memorial and the Rylstone Cross both giving amazing views across the Dales.
Descent is via Rylstone church and onward to Cracoe before crossing the B6265 to Swinden lane and Moor lane track heading behind the Swinden limestone quarry.
We then re cross the main road back through Litton and over the falls again to Grassington.
There is some ‘rough’ moorland walking on the edge of the moor and the terrain can be exposed in inclement weather, otherwise good paths.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 10 miles
Ascent: 1000 ft
Dave Purdy
Eddy Drela

The “B” walk starts by following the same route northwards as the “C” walk but at a point just before Conistone Dib we turn south east on a grassy path, climbing gently to reach Bare House and High Barn.
An enclosed path then leads us to Yarnbury and the old lead mine workings, finally turning south to follow Hebden Beck into Hebden.
From here we continue to descend, eventually reaching the River Wharfe at the Suspension Bridge.
An easy river bank path then leads us back to the coach via Sedber Lane. IF the river level is low it may be possible to cross the river by the stepping stones to visit Linton Church.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 7.75 miles
Ascent: 850 ft
Carole Bryning
Jan Purdy

We walk up through the main street of Grassington and then follow the Dales Way northwards towards Conistone with views of Wharfedale.
A grassy path then takes us down past Conistone Dib through the dramatic gorge and into the pretty village of Conistone.
We follow the path of the River Wharfe along a quiet lane before reaching the riverside path back to Linton where we will stop to view the Falls before returning to the car park via Sedber Lane.
